Like I have mentioned before, I am going to be posting recipes that my family loves. I don’t know about you, but I have been to many “family friendly” recipe blogs before and there was nothing my kids would ever let cross their lips. I want this to be a place where you can come and know that anything on this blog will be a hit in your house!
Yes, Dirt Cups have been around for a long time and are easy to make, but I think they deserve their own spotlight. Don’t you? What is not to love about chocolate pudding sandwiched between layers of crushed Oreo cookies and topped with sweet gummy worms?
- 2 cups cold milk
- 1 package (4 oz) chocolate instant pudding
- 1 - 8 oz container whipped topping, thawed
- 1 package (16 0z) Oreos (crushed into crumbs)
- Gummy Worms
- 10 plastic cups (8 oz. size)
- Pour the milk into a mixing bowl and add the pudding mix.
- Beat with a wire whisk until well blended (about 2 minutes)
- Let pudding stand for five minutes.
- Stir whipped topping into the pudding very gently until it is all the same color.
- Place about 1 Tablespoon of the crushed cookies into the bottom of each cup.
- Then add a 2 Tablespoons of pudding to each cup.
- Then repeat another layer of cookies, then pudding, and then cookies.
- Finish up by adding 2 gummy worms cut in half to the top of each of the cups.
- Put cups into the refrigerator for about one hour to chill them.
What is whipped topping? Do you mean something like a whipped cream? And it says thawed – is there a frozen whipped cream? I’m a little confused on that one.
Whipped Topping is Cool Whip. It is kept in the freezer so you want to let it thaw in the fridge for a few hours before using it in this recipe. Hope that helps!
how many cups will this make?
nevermind…Now I see ten!
No problem, Laura! Let me know how much you love them after you make them. 🙂 I am making them today myself!
I am going to make these for my son’s preschool class. Can they be made the night before and kept in the fridge overnight? Also, will they be ok out of the fridge about two hours before being served?
Yes, they can definitely be made the night before and kept in the fridge. They will be fine to sit out for just a couple hours. I know everyone will LOVE them! My kids are teens now and they still ask me to make these all the time!
Hi! Asking these fory little man party. One question. … When you crush the cookie is it the whole Oreo including the middle or just the top and bottom?
Marlena, use the whole cookie! 🙂
We made this last night for my 5 year old’s snack day. It was fun and easy to make, and most of all yummy! Thanks for the recipe.
I am so glad that you had fun making it and enjoying it! Now I think I need to go make it again too! Thanks for taking the time to come back and leave a comment!
I did these in a pan and I would say to get more Oreos if you are going to do layers. But other wise it worked!
Honestly, this is probably the best dirt pudding I’ve ever made. Thanks!
Thanks for the recipe. It was delicious and chilling on a summer day.
Can these be made 24 hrs prior to eating?
Yes! They should last for 4-5 days in the fridge!
omg i love this recipe thank you so much for posting it has made my life better thanks you
These are amazing the 4th graders I teach love them they gobled them up in no problem definitely making them again
Is the pudding / whipped cream mixture supposed to be very liquidy? I followed the directions exactly but I’m concerned that it’s not thick….
Did you use Cool Whip or similar whipped topping? If so, I don’t know why it would be liquidy. If you used a lighter whipped topping (such as canned Redi-whip) that would probably not hold up well and could be more liquidy.
We’re having a party at work and I wanted to make these for halloween, your article was the first thing I saw in google. My name is ALSO Shari, so it’s meant to be.

Yes, we do all the time. Enjoy!
When crushing the oreos, do I take the cream out and just have the chocolate cookie part or leave the cream filing in? Thanks!
You leave the cream filling in. So yummy!
Best recipe ever!
These are my go-to dirt cup recipe! I have done the chocolate as written, as well as some variations that all taste great (chocolate oreos + vanilla pudding AND golden oreos + vanilla pudding).
The vanilla pudding is nice because you can dye it to fit whatever theme you want. Thank you for the recipe!
