Copycat Steak n’ Shake Garlic Cheeseburger

Copycat Steak n' Shake Garlic Cheeseburger |

Have you tried the Steak n’ Shake Double Garlic Cheeseburger yet?  Oh my goodness.  It is definitely one of the best cheeseburgers I have ever had.  I think one of the reasons that I love it so much is because…

a) I LOVE me some garlic

b) It is so different from burgers you get at other places

c) It has a lot of garlic… did I mention that already?  ha!

I seriously CRAVE these burgers.  I knew I couldn’t keep driving across town every time I got a craving, so I set out to make my own version.

Copycat Steak n' Shake Garlic Cheeseburger |

Theirs is a double steakburger with two very thin meat patties and two pieces of cheese.  I chose to do one thicker meat patty with the two pieces of cheese.  Then we both add a big spooful of garlic butter spread on top of the patty, followed by a little melted butter and generous sprinkling of garlic salt on top of the bun.

My husband grills the best burgers you will EVER EVER taste in your life.  He gets all the credit for grilling this bad boy right here.  His burgers are sooooo incredibly juicy.

Copycat Steak n' Shake Garlic Cheeseburger
  • 2 lbs. ground beef
  • garlic butter (homemade or prepared)
  • garlic salt
  • 1 Tbsp melted butter
  • 12 slices of american cheese (or any cheese you prefer)
  • 6 hamburger buns
  1. Spread garlic butter on the insides of a hamburger bun.
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, place the buns with the garlic side down and toast them.
  3. Set aside buns when done.
  4. Pat out the hamburger patties into the desired size.
  5. Preheat your grill or a skillet to medium high.
  6. Once preheated, cook your hamburgers until done to your liking.
  7. Add cheese in the last minute while your hamburgers are cooking and let it melt well.
  8. Place your cheeseburgers on the bottom bun. Spread just a little more garlic butter on top of the burger.
  9. Place the top bun and brush on the melted butter.
  10. Lightly sprinkle the top of the bun with garlic salt.
  11. Devour and enjoy!
** Recipe calls for 2 pieces of cheese per burger like Steak n' Shake does. It is every bit as good with just one slice of cheese so that is what we normally do.

Homemade Garlic Butter Spread
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1 Tbsp minced garlic
  • ¼ cup grated parmesan cheese
  • ¼ - ½ tsp garlic salt (adjust to your liking)
  • 2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp italian seasoning
  • ½ tsp ground black pepper
  • ¼ tsp ground paprika
  1. In a small bowl, mix together the softened butter, minced garlic and parmesan cheese.
  2. Then add in the salt, italian seasoning, black pepper and paprika.
  3. Mix well and use as desired.

Wow these look so delicious!!!!! I wish I had one right now

    • You will have to make them and let me know what you think. They are soooo good! As a matter of fact, I think I might have to make a change in tonight’s menu to accomodate these again!

  2. HELP! How many burgers does this make?
I am confused by the five pieces of cheese since you show two per burger.
This sounds so yummy, I can’t wait to make them.

    • Jane, thank you so much for catching that! Sometimes I am in such a hurry to get a post up that I forget to double check it. So sorry! I just updated the recipe. I made them again last night (I am so addicted to these things!) and it makes six burgers, so you will need 12 pieces of cheese. Obviously, if you aren’t a big cheese lover you can cut that down to one piece per burger. I can’t wait to hear how you like them!!

What kind of buns did you use? They look great. Also, thinking of making your shish kabobs…how many lbs of meat did you use?

    • Hi Erica… I used just regular store brand hamburger buns. I brush melted butter on them and sprinkle with garlic salt. Yum!! If you make these Copycat Garlic Burgers, be sure to make the homemade garlic butter. It is soooo yummy. I make it and put it on steaks and french bread too. So good!! For the shish kabobs, we use about 3lbs of meat. Be sure to come back and let me know what you think about all of it. 🙂

  4. I want to thank you for the recipe! It was superb! Did it exactly as you said but I used only one slice of cheese. Served with ceasar salad.

    • Barb, isn’t it yummy?? I crave these burgers all the time. As a matter of fact, I think I need to add them to this week’s menu! 🙂 Thanks so much for coming and letting me know they were a hit!
